Torchy and Vee
Torchy, the red-haired former office boy who has risen to be private secretary to Old Hickory Ellins of the Corrugated Trust, is now married to Vee and the father of young Master Richard, and the war has given him a desk job with the Ordnance Department that never gets him nearer the front than Bridgeport, Connecticut. The seventeen episodes, told in his rapid Broadway slang, involve a spinster in need of rescue, a vamp in a window, Liberty bonds, a mystery and the home front of 1918 seen from a New York office. Sewell Ford published the book in 1919; it is one of a long series about Torchy that American magazine readers followed for more than a decade. The stories are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first one is free.
