Tom Brown's School Days, published in 1857 under the signature "An Old Boy," is Thomas Hughes's novel of life at Rugby School under its reforming headmaster, Thomas Arnold, which Hughes himself had attended. Tom, a sturdy squire's son from the Vale of White Horse, arrives as a new boy, makes friends with the cheerful East, plays football and cricket, suffers the tyranny of the bully Flashman, and gets into scrapes, until he is put in charge of a delicate, pious newcomer, George Arthur, and begins to grow up. The book did much to shape the image of the English public school and its ideal of manly Christianity. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
