Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness

by Henri Bergson

Time and Free Will is Henri Bergson's first book, published in French in 1889 as Essai sur les donnees immediates de la conscience and translated by F. L. Pogson with the author's help in 1910. Its three chapters argue that psychology has misdescribed the mind in the language of space. Conscious states do not have measurable intensity; they are not laid out side by side like objects but interpenetrate in a flowing duration that clocks and numbers cannot capture; and the determinist case against free will depends on picturing a decision as a path through space. The distinction drawn here between lived time and the time of science underlies all his later work. Pogson adds a preface and a bibliography. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
