Three men in a boat (to say nothing of the dog)

About 4 h 27 min of reading20 chapters

Three Men in a Boat, published in 1889, is Jerome K. Jerome's account of a fortnight's rowing holiday up the Thames from Kingston to Oxford taken by the narrator J., his friends George and Harris, and the fox terrier Montmorency. Jerome meant to write a serious guide to the river, and some of its history survives, but the book was taken over by the misfortunes of packing, pitching tents in the rain, opening tins without an opener, towing, singing comic songs and dealing with steam launches. The humor is dry and the digressions are the point. It was an enormous success at the time and has stayed in print ever since. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
