Thought-Forms
Thought-Forms, published in 1901 by the Theosophists Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater, claims to describe and illustrate what thoughts and emotions look like to clairvoyant sight. The authors explain their belief that every thought produces a vibration and a floating form in subtle matter, set out a key to the meaning of colors, and then present a series of colored plates said to show devotion, intellect, anger, sympathy, fear, greed and other states as shapes and clouds, as well as the forms built by music heard in a church. Whatever one makes of the doctrine, the abstract images in the book were noticed by painters, and it has been cited as an influence on early abstract art.
