This second volume of the Oxford edition of Samuel Johnson's works, published in 1825, contains the first part of The Rambler, the periodical essays he issued twice a week from March 1750 to March 1752, writing almost all of them himself. Beginning with the first number, the essays treat the difficulty of beginning, the dangers of idleness and procrastination, the vanity of hopes, the miseries of authors, marriage, envy and the conduct of life, alternating moral reflection with character sketches and letters from imaginary correspondents.
