The Wind Bloweth, published in 1922 with illustrations by George Bellows, is a novel by the Irish-American writer Donn Byrne. Shane Campbell grows up in the glens of Antrim, raised among an uncle's books and the Gaelic songs and stories of the north of Ireland, and goes to sea as a boy. The novel follows him through a life spent on sailing ships and in the ports of the world, from the Mediterranean to the East, through love, loss and wandering, always pulled between the open sea and the land he left. Byrne writes in a lyrical, rhythmic prose meant to catch, as his dedication says, a beauty he felt was dying. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
