The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby
The Water-Babies, published by Charles Kingsley in 1863, is the story of Tom, a little chimney sweep who loses his way in the flues of a great house, frightens a young lady in her bedroom, flees across the moors and falls into a river, where he is turned into a water-baby. In the stream and then in the sea he meets trout, otters, lobsters and other water-babies, and is schooled by the two fairies Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid before setting out to the Other-end-of-Nowhere to rescue his old master Grimes. Kingsley wrote it for his youngest son, and he packed it with satire on education, science and society, as well as his own hard-won sympathy for the poor.
