The Viking Age. Volume 2 (of 2)
The early history, manners, and customs of the ancestors of the English-speaking nations
This second volume of Paul B. Du Chaillu's The Viking Age, published in 1889, continues his account of the life of the early Scandinavians, drawn from the sagas and Eddas and from objects found in mounds, cairns and bogs. Its chapters cover marriage and divorce, the raising of children, inheritance feasts and foster-brotherhood, weapons, war customs and rock carvings, warships, fleets and sea battles, traders and debts, halls and feasts, the dress of men and women, bracteates, sports, women's work, and the skills of poetry and music. Du Chaillu, an explorer best known for his African travels, argued that the Norse were the chief ancestors of the English-speaking peoples, a thesis later historians did not accept. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
