The Seven Plays in English Verse
This volume contains all seven surviving tragedies of Sophocles in the verse translation of Lewis Campbell, professor of Greek at St. Andrews, first published complete in 1883 and revised for the World's Classics in 1906. Campbell arranges the plays in what he takes to be their order of composition rather than by story: Antigone, Aias, King Oedipus, Electra, The Trachinian Maidens, Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonos, so that the three Theban plays are separated. His preface explains the choice and recalls the amateur production of the Trachiniae in Scotland in 1877 that encouraged him to finish the set. Blank verse carries the dialogue and rhymed lyric measures the choruses, and notes on proper names close the book. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
