The Secret Garden
Mary Lennox, a sour, neglected child of English parents in India, is orphaned by cholera and sent to Misselthwaite Manor on the Yorkshire moors, the house of an uncle she has never met. There she hears crying in the night, finds a locked garden that has been shut up for ten years, and meets Dickon, a moor boy who can talk to animals, and her cousin Colin, an invalid who has been told he will die. Bringing the garden back to life brings the children back with it. Burnett published the novel in 1911, and it was less celebrated than her earlier books until the middle of the twentieth century. It is now the one for which she is remembered. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
