The Principles of Masonic Law

by Albert Gallatin Mackey

A Treatise on the Constitutional Laws, Usages and Landmarks of Freemasonry

About 4 h 46 min of reading128 chapters

Albert Gallatin Mackey, a South Carolina physician who became one of the most prolific American writers on Freemasonry, wrote The Principles of Masonic Law as a systematic treatise on the rules governing the fraternity. After an introduction on the authorities from which Masonic law derives, the book is arranged in four parts: the law of Grand Lodges, the laws of subordinate lodges, the rights and duties of individual Masons, and Masonic offenses and their punishments. Mackey writes in the manner of a legal commentator, setting out each principle and the reasoning behind it, and the book remains a useful window on how nineteenth-century American Masonry understood its own governance. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
