The Practice of the Presence of God the Best Rule of a Holy Life
Brother Lawrence was a lay brother of the Discalced Carmelites in Paris who spent much of his religious life working in the monastery kitchen. After his death in 1691, his conversations and letters were gathered into this short book. Its single theme is the habit of turning to God continually in the middle of ordinary work, so that washing pots or running errands becomes as much a form of prayer as kneeling in chapel. Brother Lawrence writes without theory or elaborate method, and with a calm, plain warmth that has made the book a favorite among Christian readers of many traditions for more than three centuries. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
