The pirates of the New England coast, 1630-1730
The Pirates of the New England Coast, published in 1923 by the Marine Research Society in Salem, was compiled by George Francis Dow, a curator of New England antiquities, and John Henry Edmonds, the Massachusetts state archivist. Drawing on court records, newspapers and other documents, they tell the stories of the pirates who raided the coast in its first century, from Dixey Bull and Thomas Pound to Captain Kidd, Thomas Tew, Samuel Bellamy, whose ship was wrecked off Wellfleet, Ned Low and William Fly. Captives' narratives such as Philip Ashton's are included, along with chapters on pirate haunts and life, and appendices reprinting commissions, dying speeches and other original papers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
