This is the fourth and final volume of G. W. M. Reynolds's enormous penny serial, issued weekly from 1844 to 1848 and read by far more Londoners than Dickens ever was. It completes the Second Series, picking up at chapter CX with a masked avenger known as the Blackamoor visiting prisoners in his private dungeon, and carries the fates of Esther de Medina, Old Death, Thomas Rainford and the rest through an insolvent debtors' court, a lapse of nineteen years and a long sequence of reckonings. Reynolds mixed melodrama, radical politics and exposure of aristocratic vice in roughly equal parts, and the volume is best approached as the last installment of a very long story.
