The Moonstone is a yellow diamond looted from an Indian shrine during the storming of Seringapatam in 1799 and left, by a vindictive uncle, to Rachel Verinder on her eighteenth birthday. The night after she receives it, it disappears from her bedroom. The novel follows the search through a series of narrators, the old house steward Gabriel Betteredge, who consults Robinson Crusoe for guidance in all things, the evangelical Miss Clack, the lawyer Bruff and the young Franklin Blake, each of whom knows only part of the story. Sergeant Cuff of Scotland Yard, who grows roses, is one of the first great fictional detectives. Published in 1868, the book was described by T. S. Eliot as the first and best of English detective novels. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
