Mémoires d'outre-tombe volume 5

Translated by Alexander Teixeira de MattosAbout 14 h 18 min of reading12 chapters

This is the fifth of the six volumes of Alexander Teixeira de Mattos's translation of the Memoires d'outre-tombe, published in 1902. It opens in Rome in 1829, where Chateaubriand is ambassador of Charles X: dispatches to the foreign minister Portalis, letters to Madame Recamier, the conclave that followed the death of Leo XII, walks among the ruins, his relations with the Bonaparte family, then his return to Paris, the formation of the Polignac ministry and his resignation of the embassy. The books that follow open the fourth and last part of the memoirs, in which the author, out of office, witnesses the collapse of the monarchy he had served. Chateaubriand wrote the memoirs for publication after his death in 1848. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
