The Long Roll, published in 1911, is Mary Johnston's novel of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia from the secession winter to Chancellorsville. Richard Cleave, a Virginia lawyer and farmer, marches with the Stonewall Brigade through the Valley campaign, the Seven Days, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg, while at home Judith Cary waits and his rival Maury Stafford schemes against him. Stonewall Jackson appears as a central character, drawn so unflatteringly in places that his widow objected. Johnston, a Virginian whose father had served under Jackson, researched the campaigns closely, and the book's long battle chapters are its distinction. A sequel, Cease Firing, carries the story to Appomattox. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
