The Knights of the Cross, or, Krzyzacy: Historical Romance
The Knights of the Cross, published in Polish as Krzyżacy in 1900, is Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel of medieval Poland and its struggle with the Teutonic Order. The young knight Zbyszko of Bogdaniec vows himself to Danusia, daughter of Jurand of Spychów, a border lord whose private war with the Order has made him their most hated enemy. The knights' revenge on Jurand and the abduction of Danusia drive the story, which also follows the sturdy country girl Jagienka, the old uncle Macko and a crowd of monks, courtiers and Lithuanian warriors. The book builds to the battle of Grunwald in 1410. Samuel A. Binion's translation presents the complete text, written at a time when Poland itself was partitioned and without a state. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
