The History of the Standard Oil Company
The History of the Standard Oil Company, published in 1904 after serialization in McClure's Magazine, is Ida M. Tarbell's investigation of how John D. Rockefeller built the first great American trust. This volume covers the birth of the industry in the Pennsylvania oil regions, where Tarbell grew up, the rise of Rockefeller's Cleveland refinery, the South Improvement Company scheme and the oil war of 1872, the secret railroad rebates, the crisis of 1878 and the compromise of 1880 by which the independents were brought to terms. Documents are printed in an appendix. Tarbell worked from court records, legislative hearings and interviews, and her calm, detailed exposure of the methods of monopoly helped bring about the breakup of the company in 1911.
