The third and final volume of James Augustus St. John's History of the Manners and Customs of Ancient Greece, published in 1842, deals with the working life of the Greek world. It completes the account of slavery with chapters on slaves and on the serfs of Sparta, Crete and Thessaly, then turns to commerce and industry: the condition of the poor, millers, bakers and vintners, perfumers, barbers and goldsmiths, smiths and miners, builders, potters and glass-workers, weavers, tanners and dyers of purple. Later chapters survey the trade of the Doric states and of Attica, navigation, and the exports and imports of the islands, Italy, Gaul, Spain, Africa and the East, and the volume ends with funeral ceremonies and the index. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
