Livy's History of Rome, written under Augustus, originally ran to 142 books, of which thirty-five survive. These first eight, in the translation of D. Spillan, carry the story from the landing of Aeneas and the founding of the city by Romulus to the Latin War of the fourth century BC. Here are the legends every Roman knew: the rape of the Sabine women, Horatius at the bridge, Lucretia and the expulsion of the kings, Cincinnatus called from his plough, the Gauls' sack of Rome and Camillus' return. Livy also traces the long struggle between patricians and plebeians and the making of the republic's institutions. He writes to show what made Rome great, and he is frank about his sources' uncertainty. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
