The History of Freedom, and Other Essays

by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton

About 16 h 37 min of reading39 chapters

The History of Freedom and Other Essays, published in 1907, was the first collection of Lord Acton's scattered writings, edited by his pupils John Neville Figgis and Reginald Vere Laurence with a chronicle of his life. It opens with the two Bridgnorth lectures of 1877 on the history of freedom in antiquity and in Christianity, the nearest Acton came to the great history of liberty he planned and never wrote. Essays on nationality, on the massacre of St. Bartholomew, on Wolsey and the divorce of Henry VIII, on the Vatican Council, on the historical work of his teacher Döllinger and on George Eliot's life show the range of a Catholic historian who held that history was a moral tribunal.
