The Grand Babylon Hotel
Theodore Racksole, an American millionaire visiting London with his daughter Nella, is told that the Grand Babylon Hotel does not serve steak and a bottle of Bass, so he buys the hotel on the spot. He then discovers that his new property is full of secrets. A waiter behaves strangely, a young man dies in his room, a German prince fails to arrive for an appointment, and the hotel's cellars and Thames-side moorings hide more than wine. Bennett wrote the book quickly as a serial in 1901 and published it in 1902, and it was his first popular success. It is a light, fast comedy of intrigue set among the very rich, with Nella Racksole as its most capable character. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
