The Frogs
The Frogs, first staged in Athens in 405 B.C., is Aristophanes' comedy of literature and the afterlife, given here in the verse translation by B. B. Rogers printed in the Harvard Classics. Dionysus, god of the theater, is so dismayed by the poor state of Athenian tragedy that he decides to go down to Hades, with his slave Xanthias, to bring back Euripides. After a comic journey, which includes the croaking chorus of frogs on the lake of the dead, he finds himself judging a contest between Euripides and Aeschylus, who compete line by line. Satire, parody and serious advice to the city mix freely. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
