The Four-Pools Mystery
The Four-Pools Mystery, published anonymously in 1908, is a detective novel by Jean Webster, later famous for Daddy-Long-Legs. Its narrator is a young New York lawyer who, worn out by a sensational forgery trial, goes south to rest at Four-Pools, the plantation in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia that he remembers from a boyhood visit. He finds the old house shadowed by family estrangements and by the ha'nt, a ghost the servants swear walks the grounds. A robbery and stranger events follow, a detective is called in and sent back again, and the narrator finds himself drawn into the investigation. The novel blends mystery, Southern atmosphere and gentle romance. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
