The First Blast of the Trumpet against the monstrous regiment of Women

by John Knox

About 1 h 56 min of reading18 chapters

John Knox, the leader of the Scottish Reformation, published The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women anonymously in Geneva in 1558. "Regiment" means rule, and his argument is that government by a woman is contrary to nature and to God's law. His targets were the Catholic queens of his day, Mary Tudor in England and Mary of Guise, regent of Scotland, but the timing proved unfortunate: within months Elizabeth, a Protestant, came to the English throne and never forgave him. Knox writes with the fierce scriptural logic of a preacher, citing the Bible and the Church Fathers at length.
