The Fables of Aesop

Selected, Told Anew, and Their History Traced

About 58 min of reading84 chapters

This edition of The Fables of Aesop, published in 1894, was selected and retold by the folklorist Joseph Jacobs and illustrated by Richard Heighway. It gathers more than eighty of the animal tales attributed to the Greek slave of the sixth century BC: The Wolf and the Lamb, The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, The Fox and the Crow, The Lion and the Mouse, The Hare and the Tortoise, Androcles, The Milkmaid and Her Pail, each closing with its moral. Jacobs prefaces the fables with a short history of the Aesopic tradition, tracing how the stories passed from Greece through Rome, Byzantium and India to the medieval and modern collections, and his retellings have been a standard text ever since. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
