The Essays of Arthur Schopenhauer: the Wisdom of Life
The Wisdom of Life is the first part of Arthur Schopenhauer's Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life, from the collection Parerga and Paralipomena of 1851, in T. Bailey Saunders's translation. Setting aside his metaphysics of the will, Schopenhauer here asks the practical question of how a life may be made as tolerable as possible, and he divides what a man has into three: what he is, what he possesses and how he stands in the estimation of others. Health, temperament and intellect come first; wealth is a moderate good; and the chapters on honor, rank, pride and fame treat our hunger for other people's opinion with a sharp and comic contempt. It is Schopenhauer at his most readable. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
