This fourth volume of The English Works of Thomas Hobbes, collected and edited by Sir William Molesworth and published in 1840, gathers several of the philosopher's shorter treatises and controversies. It opens with Human Nature and De Corpore Politico, the two parts of his early Elements of Law, which set out his account of the passions and of the origin of sovereign power. Then come Of Liberty and Necessity, his exchange with Bishop John Bramhall on free will, and his later answer to Bramhall's attack on Leviathan, along with An Historical Narration Concerning Heresy, a defense of his own reputation and loyalty, his answer to Sir William Davenant's preface to Gondibert, and a letter to Edward Howard.
