The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte
The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, written in 1852, is Karl Marx's analysis of how the French revolution of 1848 ended in the coup d'état by which Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, nephew of the emperor, made himself master of France. Marx follows the shifting alliances of the bourgeois parties, the workers, the peasants and the army, and explains how a mediocre adventurer could profit from their divisions. The essay opens with his famous remark that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce, and is full of sardonic portraits. This English translation was made for American socialist readers, with a translator's preface that relates it to the labor movement of the day.
