The Education of Henry Adams
The Education of Henry Adams is an autobiography written in the third person by the great-grandson and grandson of two American presidents. Privately printed in 1907 and published in 1918, it follows Adams from a Quincy boyhood through Harvard, Berlin and Rome, the years he spent as his father's secretary in London during the Civil War, journalism in Washington under Grant, and a late career as a historian. Adams insists throughout that his schooling fitted him for a world that had vanished, and the later chapters, including "The Dynamo and the Virgin," try to make sense of a century accelerating out of anyone's control. Twenty years of his life are passed over in silence. It received the Pulitzer Prize in 1919. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
