The Economic Consequences of the Peace

by John Maynard Keynes

About 4 h 39 min of reading32 chapters

The Economic Consequences of the Peace was written by John Maynard Keynes in the summer of 1919, after he resigned from the British delegation at the Paris Peace Conference, and published that December. Keynes argues that the Treaty of Versailles demanded reparations from Germany far beyond its capacity to pay, that it dismantled the economic system on which prewar Europe had depended, and that it would bring ruin to the defeated and the victors alike. He describes the conference and its leaders, Wilson, Clemenceau and Lloyd George, in portraits that were much resented, and he ends with proposals for revision. The book made him famous and shaped the debate about the treaty for decades. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
