The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America

by Thomas Jefferson

About 7 min of reading3 chapters

Adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence announced that the thirteen colonies were free states and explained why. Thomas Jefferson's draft, revised by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and the Congress, opens with the assertion that all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights, then sets out a long list of grievances against George III, and ends with the delegates pledging their lives, fortunes and sacred honor. This edition gives the final text, an introduction, and Jefferson's handwritten drafts, which show the passages that were cut, including his denunciation of the slave trade. It is short enough to read in a quarter of an hour. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
