The Complete Works of Robert Burns: Containing his Poems, Songs, and Correspondence.
With a New Life of the Poet, and Notices, Critical and Biographical by Allan Cunningham
This edition of Robert Burns, prepared by Allan Cunningham and first published in 1834, brings together the poems, the songs and ballads, the general correspondence and a life of the poet, with Cunningham's critical and biographical notes to each piece. Here are "The Death and Dying Words of Poor Mailie," the epistles to Davie, "Address to the Deil," "To a Haggis," "The Jolly Beggars," "Death and Dr. Hornbook," and the hundreds of songs Burns wrote or reworked for the Scots Musical Museum, with the letters in which he discusses them. Cunningham, himself a Scottish poet who had known Burns's circle, writes with partisan warmth. It is a large book and a good place to read the poet whole. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
