The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce, Volume 02

by Ambrose Bierce

In the Midst of Life: Tales of Soldiers and Civilians

About 5 h 04 min of reading30 chapters

The second volume of Ambrose Bierce's Collected Works, issued in 1909, is In the Midst of Life, his book of tales of soldiers and civilians first published in San Francisco in 1891 with the help of a merchant friend after the major publishers turned it down. The soldier stories draw on Bierce's own service in the Union army: "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," "Chickamauga," "A Horseman in the Sky," "One of the Missing" and "Killed at Resaca" treat war as a trap of chance, error and grotesque death. The civilian tales, among them "The Man and the Snake," "The Boarded Window" and "The Eyes of the Panther," turn the same cold irony on fear and the supernatural. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
