The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table
Oliver Wendell Holmes, a Boston physician and poet, began publishing The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table in the new Atlantic Monthly in 1857, and the papers appeared as a book in 1858. The Autocrat is a talkative boarder who holds forth at breakfast on any subject that occurs to him, from rowing, horses and old age to science, religion and the habits of Boston, while fellow boarders, among them a divinity student, an old gentleman and a young schoolmistress, listen and interrupt. Witty aphorisms, gentle satire and several poems, including The Chambered Nautilus, are woven into the conversation, along with a quiet romance. The book made Holmes famous. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
