The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin was begun in 1771 as a letter to his son and left unfinished at his death in 1790. It tells how a Boston candlemaker's son ran away to Philadelphia at seventeen, taught himself to write by imitating Addison, built a printing business, founded a library, a fire company and an academy, invented a stove, and experimented with electricity, before his public career carried him to London. Franklin writes plainly and with humor about his mistakes, which he calls errata, and sets out the scheme of thirteen virtues by which he tried to perfect himself. The book is a founding document of the American idea of the self-made man and of the practical, improving spirit Franklin embodied.
