The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments, of Great Britain and Ireland, published in 1881, was John Evans's companion to his earlier study of stone implements and long served as the standard work on the British Bronze Age. Evans, a paper manufacturer and one of the most respected antiquaries of his day, catalogues the celts and axes, chisels, gouges, knives, daggers, rapiers, swords, spearheads, shields, personal ornaments and molds found in the islands, with hundreds of woodcuts and comparisons with Continental finds. Later chapters discuss methods of casting, the hoards in which these objects were buried, and the chronology and origins of bronze working in Britain. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
