The Age of Fable
The Age of Fable, published in 1855 by Thomas Bulfinch, a Boston bank clerk with a love of literature, became the standard retelling of classical mythology for English-speaking readers. Writing so that readers could understand the allusions in poetry and conversation, Bulfinch recounts the stories of the Greek and Roman gods and heroes, from Prometheus, Apollo and Daphne and Perseus to the Argonauts, Hercules, the Trojan War and the wanderings of Ulysses and Aeneas, and adds chapters on Egyptian, Hindu and Norse mythology and on the Druids. Quotations from English poets show how the myths lived on in literature. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
