Tess of the d'Urbervilles, published in 1891, is Thomas Hardy's novel of a country girl destroyed by the men who claim to love her. Tess Durbeyfield, daughter of a feckless carter who has learned that he descends from the ancient d'Urbervilles, is sent to claim kin with a rich family of that name and is seduced, or raped, by their son Alec. Years later, working as a dairymaid, she falls in love with Angel Clare, and whether to tell him her history shapes the rest of the book. Hardy's subtitle, A Pure Woman, was a provocation, and the novel's attack on the sexual double standard, its Wessex landscapes and its indifferent universe made it both a scandal and a classic. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
