Tales and Novels of J. de La Fontaine — Complete

About 6 h 13 min of reading74 chapters

Jean de La Fontaine is best known for his Fables, but his Tales and Novels in Verse, published from 1665 onward, made him famous first. These are bawdy, witty stories, mostly retold from Boccaccio, Ariosto, Rabelais, the medieval fabliaux and other sources, about clever wives, jealous husbands, credulous monks and lovers who outwit them all. This English verse translation begins with a life of La Fontaine and his preface, followed by tales such as Joconde, The Cudgelled and Contented Cuckold, The Falcon, The Little Dog, The Ephesian Matron, Belphegor and The Nightingale. The tone is playful and openly licentious, and the tales were long banned or bowdlerized for that reason. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
