Stradella, published in 1909, the year of F. Marion Crawford's death, is a historical romance built on the legend of Alessandro Stradella, the seventeenth-century composer and singer. In Venice the wealthy Senator Pignaver, a widower of fifty, has decided to marry his ward and niece Ortensia, a girl of eighteen whom his late wife raised. Ortensia has other ideas once she hears Stradella sing, and their flight from Venice sets the Senator's hired assassins on their trail across Italy, to Rome and beyond. Crawford, who lived most of his life in Italy, fills the story with Venetian palaces, music and the manners of the age of the young Louis XIV, and keeps the suspense of the pursuit to the end. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
