About 10 h 35 min of reading42 chapters

This first volume of J. C. Smith's Oxford edition of The Faerie Queene, published in 1909, contains Books I to III of Edmund Spenser's unfinished epic, printed from the quartos of 1590 and 1596 with the variants recorded. Book I follows the Redcrosse Knight, the legend of Holiness, through his separation from Una, his captivity in the House of Pride and his battle with the dragon; Book II sends Sir Guyon, the knight of Temperance, through the Cave of Mammon to the Bower of Bliss; Book III belongs to Britomart, the woman warrior of Chastity, and to the stories of Florimell, Belphoebe and Amoret. Smith's introduction describes the text, and the letter to Raleigh explains Spenser's design. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
