Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases
Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases is the pamphlet Ida B. Wells published in 1892, after a mob destroyed the office of her Memphis newspaper, the Free Speech, in reprisal for an editorial on lynching. Expanding that editorial, she examines the pretext most often given for lynching, the charge of rape, and shows from the white press's own reports that it was usually false and often covered consensual relationships; she details recent cases, indicts the Southern press and the silence of the North, and ends with a call to self-help, including migration, boycotts and the Winchester rifle. A letter from Frederick Douglass serves as preface. It is a short, exact and courageous piece of investigative journalism.
