She Stoops to Conquer, first acted at Covent Garden in 1773, is Oliver Goldsmith's deliberate answer to the sentimental comedy of his day, and it has never left the stage. Young Marlow, tongue-tied before ladies of his own rank and easy with barmaids, is sent to court Kate Hardcastle; misdirected by her half-brother Tony Lumpkin, he takes the Hardcastle house for an inn and its master for the landlord. Kate, learning of his two manners, plays the servant to win him. A second couple, a casket of jewels and a midnight ride round the horse pond complete the mistakes of a night.
