Salammbô, published in 1862, is Gustave Flaubert's novel of ancient Carthage, written after Madame Bovary. At the end of the First Punic War, unpaid mercenaries feast in the gardens of the general Hamilcar Barca and then turn against the city. Their leader, the Libyan Mâtho, is consumed by passion for Salammbô, Hamilcar's daughter and a priestess of the goddess Tanit, and with the cunning slave Spendius he steals the sacred veil on which the city's safety depends. Salammbô goes to recover it. Flaubert built the book from years of study, and its scenes of ritual, siege, battle and massacre are rendered with exact, sumptuous and often violent detail. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
