Pollyanna, published in 1913, is Eleanor H. Porter's novel about an eleven-year-old orphan sent to live with her stern, wealthy Aunt Polly in a small Vermont town. Pollyanna arrives with the glad game her missionary father taught her: in every disappointment, find something to be glad about. She plays it in the bare attic room she is given, with the grieving Mrs. Snow, the hermit John Pendleton and the servants, and before long the game has spread through the town. An accident late in the book tests whether Pollyanna can play it herself. The novel was an immediate success, added the word Pollyanna to the language and launched a series of sequels by Porter and other writers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
