Pele and Hiiaka: A Myth From Hawaii
Pele and Hiiaka: A Myth from Hawaii, published in 1915 by the physician and folklorist Nathaniel Bright Emerson, is the fullest English telling of the central legend of Hawaiian religion. Pele, goddess of the volcano, falls into a trance at Kilauea and her spirit travels to Kauai, where she dances with the chief Lohiau. Waking, she sends her youngest sister Hiiaka to fetch him, with a strict time limit and a promise to protect Hiiaka's beloved lehua groves. The journey across the islands, past demons and sorcerers, and the betrayals that follow form the narrative, which is carried at every turn by the chants of Hiiaka, Lohiau and the others, given in Hawaiian with Emerson's translations.
