Pedagogical Anthropology

Translated by Frederic Taber CooperAbout 13 h 02 min of reading65 chapters

Pedagogical Anthropology, published in Italian in 1910 and in this English translation by Frederic Taber Cooper in 1913, is the scientific work Maria Montessori developed from her lectures at the University of Rome. Montessori, a physician before she became famous as an educator, argues that teachers need a scientific knowledge of the growing child. She sets out principles of biology, then studies the human body and its measurement in detail: stature, weight and proportions, the skull, face, thorax, pelvis and limbs, the pigmentation of the skin, and the normal and abnormal development of the child. Tables and diagrams accompany the text. Parts of its anthropology are now outdated, but it shows the scientific roots of her method. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
